Seth Godin’s talking is quite fascinating for me because he asks some important questions to consider
carefully about education. The questions are ‘what is school for and what
school used to be for’. He answers these questions by examining
the process of education in the US. Before 50 years ago, the school was
about teaching obedience. That is, there is a some certain pattern. For example,
students had to do what the teachers says, respect him and obey his/rules.
İn
addition to this, with the emerge of
capitalism, people started to be seen as
a part of machine and interchangeable parts of the machine. That is, if they don’t
work very well, they can be changed. The
system also can be changed with the effect of capitalism, for example, ,in
education, we started to see textbook which the speaker doesn’t believe these
textbooks is working to teach something. So we can say that these changing which is the
effect of capitalism doesn’t work in education.
When we looked at the turkish education before 50 years ago
, we can also see that these certain
patterns in education. The teacher is
seen the director in class, therefore, you had to respect and obey his/her
rules. İn addition, the student decision was not important for family or teacher
because the student became what the teacher or family want to be. İf your
family want you to be a doctor, you had to be a doctor. However, when we look
at today’s education system, new teacher doesn’t support the system which was used
50 years ago because they believe that interactive learning and the student
decision is important.
