Research Question: How do teachers correct errors?

Question research: although  people learn best through making mistakes, who should do the correcting and How do teachers correct errors?
I believe that people can learn best through their mistakes because there is  no  perfect person in this World.  Everyone can make mistakes.  Therefore, our mistakes are quite important in order to see what we need to know.  However,  although  the mistakes/ errors are important,  sometimes they  can be seen as a problem  for students  and they cannot deal with this problem, so here comes the  question.  When it becomes a problem,  who  should do the correcting ? In this situation, the  teacher  becomes a part of activities and  undertake a big part of responsibility and  they try to  correct errors , well, how they should correct errors. There is some research about it. Error correction research has focused on what techniques they should use in correcting errors. However, before this, we have to know that Every teacher will have different views on this and different ways of correcting their students. Moreover,  while you’re doing this, your student should feel comfortable. Otherwise, you cannot solve the problem. İn fact, you can create a more serious problem than the previous one. Therefore,  you have to apply some techniques in your classroom so that you could not face with any difficulties while you are correcting your student mistakes. These are some techniques which you should know:
1          1.  As soon as you notice a student making an error while we are presenting the language or practicing activities, you can ask concept checking questions.
2          2. We should encourage self correction first and then peer correction if needed.
3          3.  You can also use some drills  such as Repetition drills, Backchaining, Transformation drills and etc while doing correction because these can be helpful
4           4. We need to monitor and record the language of the learner to focus on the errors when the activity is complete.
5.          5. The teacher can give some feedback about the students’ homework or activities.
To sum up, the teacher should correct errors gently, with the teacher using a soft voice because learning can be acquired only if the student trust you.

WHAT KIND OF TEACHER ARE YOU

I did a quiz which is on the Facebook page of the British Council. According to this quiz, my quiz result is a bee. it says that you prefer to teach your student in the open air and try to bring nature into you class at every opportunity. I think this statement gives some clues about my teaching and behavior towards  the student. I believe that nature plays a big part during students’ learning and it gives some opportunity to them in order to be more creative in some courses such as art. That is, student can inspire from nature to create something. In addition to this, I am against traditional methods in the education because they restrict the student learning. As a result of this, when I become a teacher,  instead of using traditional methods, I will use some activities which help students attract their attention to the course. Moreover , I believe that music is an effective part of learning because it helps student to be relaxed in the classroom and there is a method which name is desuggestopedia is really effective for students. To  sum up, instead of relying textbook, I will prefer being in the nature and using music in my classroom.

Seth Godin

Seth Godin’s talking is quite fascinating for me  because he asks some important questions to consider carefully about education. The questions are ‘what is school for and what school used to be for’. He answers these questions  by examining  the process of education in the US. Before 50 years ago, the school was about teaching obedience. That is, there is a some certain pattern. For example, students had to do what the teachers says,  respect him and obey his/rules.
İn addition to this,  with the emerge of capitalism, people  started to be seen as a part of machine and interchangeable parts of the machine. That is, if they don’t work very well, they can be changed.  The system also can be changed with the effect of capitalism, for example, ,in education, we started to see textbook which the speaker doesn’t believe these textbooks is working to teach something.  So we can say that these changing which is the effect of capitalism doesn’t work in education.
When we looked at the turkish education before 50 years ago ,  we can also see that these   certain patterns in education. The  teacher is seen the director in class, therefore, you had to respect and obey his/her rules. İn addition, the student decision  was not important for family or teacher because the student became what the teacher or family want to be. İf your family want you to be a doctor, you had to be a doctor. However, when we look at today’s education system, new teacher doesn’t support the system which was used 50 years ago because they believe that interactive learning and the student decision is important.
